The seeds of the Peedam were sown alongside the establishment of the Gurukulam Primary School in 1937. The founders wanted to revive the traditional Indian “Gurukula” system, where education was not just about books but about character building. They chose Thiruvalluvar’s Thirukkural as the foundational text for this moral framework.
The Peedam gained its significant spiritual and literary status under the leadership of Thavathiru Palani Adigalar.
Literary Crusade: He dedicated his life to making the Thirukkural accessible to common people and students.
The “Peedam” Concept: He established the Peedam as a “Seat of Learning” (Peedam translates to “Platform” or “Altar”) where the Thirukkural is treated as a sacred manual for living, rather than just a textbook.
Over the decades (specifically post-1970s), the Peedam evolved from a small study circle into a major institution:
Spiritual Lineage: It became a center for Saiva Siddhanta and Tamil spiritualism, linking the ethical teachings of Valluvar with the devotional traditions of Tamil Nadu.
The Guru Pooja Tradition: The history of the Peedam is marked by the annual Guru Pooja, which has been celebrated for decades to honor the gurus who kept the Tamil flame alive during the colonial and post-colonial eras.
In recent history, the Peedam has gained national and international recognition:
Literary Awards: Because of the work done at the Peedam, Madurantakam became known as a center for Tamil Pulavars (Tamil Scholars).
Integration with Schools: It serves as the spiritual guardian of the three Aided Schools (Primary, Boys, and Girls), ensuring that every student who passes through these institutions is well-versed in the 1,330 couplets.
Preservation of Ethics: During times of rapid Westernization, the Peedam stood as a historical anchor, preserving the “Tamil way of life.”
Publication: The Peedam has historically published simplified commentaries on the Thirukkural to help children understand complex ethics.
The Peedam remains a living history, continuing to function as a bridge between the 2,000- year-old wisdom of Thiruvalluvar and the 21st-century students of Madurantakam.

The Peedam is led by the renowned Tamil scholar and spiritual leader Thavathiru Palani Adigalar (also known as Guru Palani Adhigal).

It operates on the principles of Universal Brotherhood and the moral codes established by Saint Thiruvalluvar.
The Peedam plays a significant role in the daily life of the Gurukulam students, providing lectures on the 1,330 couplets of the Thirukkural to instill character and discipline.
The center organizes literary meets, debates, and oratorical competitions focused on classic Tamil literature and the preservation of the Tamil language.
It is the primary venue for annual Guru Pooja celebrations and spiritual festivals. These events draw scholars, devotees, and former students from across Tamil Nadu.
Under the guidance of the Peedam, various charitable activities, including providing clothing and educational materials to underprivileged children, are conducted.
